PMA People: Bassel Bastiano Farran

Bassel Bastiano Farran, Associate

Long Beach Office, California

Bassel FarranWhat current projects are you working on?
The main project I am currently working on is the organizational and financial assessment and evaluation of the Port of Long Beach capital improvement program.

What is your career highlight so far?
PMA takes on complex projects in the construction industry, which is one of the most challenging industries to incorporate Agile concepts. I introduced a few Agile and Scrum methodologies to manage aspects of our project and how the team operates. This sharpened our responsiveness in the fast paced environment, increased customer satisfaction due to a higher alignment with customer needs, and increased collaboration within the team.

What is something new or innovative happening in your industry?
The past 10 years witnessed several disruptive innovations in our industry. They include“Lybra” the Italian technology to collect kinetic energy from railroads and convert it to electricity, self-healing concrete, construction robotics, and many other impressive innovations that will certainly change the industry as we know it in the coming 5 to 10 years.

I believe Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) glazing is an innovation that is about to see a surge in adoption. I have worked in the past with smart windows that redirect sunlight to preserve a building’s cooling power. However, BIPV innovates the process to seamlessly utilize the building’s windows, façades, and roofs to isolate and capture energy needed for the building’s consumption and store an excess of energy to transfer elsewhere.

What university or college did you graduate from?
I have a Masters of Business Administration in general management from the WP Carey School of Business. I also have a Masters of Business Administration in global management from Thunderbird School of Global Management, and I am currently studying Strategic Management at Harvard University.

What is your favorite local establishment/feature (restaurant, museum, stadium, etc.)?
The best part of Southern California is that I don’t need to have a favorite since there are so many nice restaurants and good places to visit. I enjoy driving to San Diego on the weekends for its beaches and rooftop restaurants.

Provide a Fun Fact?
I enjoy shooting and acting in short films and TV advertisements.
