PMA People: Jeff Cook

Jeff Cook, Senior Associate

New York & Los Angeles

What project(s) are you currently working on?
Since the spring of 2017 I’ve been traveling to Boston, MA to lead the implementation of Massport’s new Project Management Information System (PMIS). The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) brought PMA on to help them define business requirements, manage the configuration, and support the rollout of PMWeb, a web-based project management system that Massport will be using to manage all their capital construction projects and contract processes agency-wide.

What are some of your career highlights?
Successfully implementing Oracle Primavera Unifier for the Port of Long Beach in California is definitely a highlight of my time here at PMA. Software implementation projects are complex and can easily go off the rails if you aren’t careful. We worked our tails off, overcame many challenges, and made it to the finish line to modernize project delivery for the Port’s very large capital construction program!

What is something new/innovative happening in your industry?
I believe that the increased capabilities of smartphones and the latest generation of collaboration tools and apps are revolutionizing the way remote workers can team together. It’s an exciting time as well for Project Management software. Offerings like Unifier, e-Builder, and PMWeb keep upping their game and it’s leading to some really fantastic products that we are able to help our clients put into use to better manage their projects.

What was a transformative project or challenge that you did at PMA?
Leading a team of professionals (every one of which hailed from a different country) in Long Beach, California while living in Long Island, NY presented some unique challenges that definitely stretched my communications skills and project leadership. I loved the challenge and worked hard to overcome the various hurdles. As a result, I’ve made some lifelong friends and continue to stay in touch even as we all have moved onto other projects.

Do you get to do something at work every day that you love? If so, what is it?
PMA has been very supportive in giving me the freedom to lead our teams using modern technology. On a daily basis, we collaborate using tools like Asana, Instagantt, and Slack which I researched and then introduced and rolled out to our team. My team is spread from coast to coast but we are only a few clicks away with these amazing tools.

From which university did you graduate?
I received my Bachelors of Science from the State University of New York College at Cortland, in 1999.

What is your favorite local establishment/feature (restaurant, museum, stadium, etc.)?
I quite enjoy a good restaurant… It’s hard to pick a favorite since I travel so much. 555 East Steakhouse in Long Beach was one of my favorites when I was traveling there but I also really loved Pier 76 Fish Grill! In New York there are so many great local places in the city and on Long Island but I would probably have to go with London Lennie’s in Rego Park/Forest Hills, Queens for their fabulous seafood and stellar service!

Provide a fun fact about yourself?
I’m a bit obsessed with cars… BMWs to be specific. I drive a supercharged 2002 E46 M3 for my fun car and a 2005 E60 545i for my daily driver. Both are 6-speed manual shift and have a number of modifications done to make them a little more fast and furious! I go to lots of car shows and take tons of pictures, many of which I share via Instagram. If you know the difference between an E46 and an E60 you would definitely enjoy a conversation with me!
