Transportation Rail and Tunnel

Rail and Tunnel

Bringing challenging projects online.

Industry Demands

In cities and towns across the globe, public transportation serves as the lifeblood of mobility. With light rail construction costs at nearly $400 million per mile and heavy rail construction costs reaching $2.1 billion per mile in populous U.S. cities, cost and schedule management for these capital improvement projects must be closely scrutinized. Program management, construction management, and project controls are an intricate part of that equation.

Central Artery/Tunnel Project

Central Artery/Tunnel ProjectThis $14.7 billion project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. It involves extending I-90 under the Boston Harbor to Logan International Airport and replacing the existing I-93 highway viaduct with a newly constructed tunnel. Putting these highway improvements in the ground in a city like Boston proved to be one of the largest, most technically difficult and environmentally challenging infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the United States. The six-lane elevated highway was replaced with an eight-to-ten-lane underground expressway directly beneath the existing road, culminating at its northern limit in a fourteen-lane, two-bridge crossing of the Charles River.
